- ItemA Review of Risk Factors Affecting Safety During Installation and Dismantling Operation of Tower Cranes(2017) SALIHU, A.A. ALIYU, S.S. ABUBAKAR, M.The construction industry plays a central and significant role in the economy of any nation. One of the major reasons for ineffective project delivery in the Nigerian construction industry is the improper assessment of risk factors. The effect of cost overrun and schedule overrun not only influence the construction industry but the overall economy as well. The industry however is currently facing a lot of challenges to include constant increase in the rate of accidents on construction sites which could be due to ineffective safety management as construction companies are usually interested in maximizing their profit in order to secure funds for new investments, and cover possible expenses associated with the occurrence of risk factors during construction. Installation and dismantling of tower crane is a dangerous activity on construction sites that can result to fatal accidents if not properly managed. The first step to managing any risk process is to clearly identify the risk associated with the process. It is in view of this that this research aimed at reviewing relevant literatures on risk factors affecting safety during installation and dismantling of tower cranes with a view to establishing a list of safety risk factors upon which further studies can be carried out to complete the risk management cycle. These safety risk factors where validated through the opinion of stakeholders (Safety managers, Equipment managers and Installation/dismantling worker) engaged in the installation and dismantling of tower cranes on site. Their input helped to narrow down the list of safety risk factors to 21 amongst all the risk factors reviewed. It is recommended that a complete risk management process be carried out on this factors so as to help control the risk and eventually reduce the accidents as a result of installation and dismantling operation.
- ItemA simulation-based binomial model for building development appraisal(2021-02-19) LAWAL, Yarima Sallau IBRAHIM, Aliyu Makarfi MU'AWIYA Abubakar ISHAQ Ziyadul Hassan SA'AD Mohammed MustaphaPurpose - Building developments are often capital intensive, have a long payback period and many associated risks and uncertainties. This makes investments in building projects to be a big challenge. This study aims to develop a computerized simulation-based binomial mode! (CSBBM) for building investment appraisal with a view to improving the economic sustainability of proposed building projects. Desigti/methodology/approach - Mathematical equations and algorithms were developed based on the binomial method (KM) of real options analysis and then implemented on a computer system. A hybrid algorithm that integrates Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) and BM was also developed. A real-life project was used to test the mode!. Sensitivity analysis was also conducted to explore the influence of input variables on development option value (IX)V). Findings - The test result shows that the model developed provides a better estimate of the value of an investment when compared with traditional net present value technique, which underestimate the value. Moreover, inflation rate (i) and rental value (Ri) are the must sensitive variables for DOV. An increase in i and Ri by just 5% causes a corresponding increase in DOV by 202% and 132%, respectively. While the least sensitive variable is the discount rate (r), as an increase in r by 5% causes a corresponding decrease in DOV by just 9%. The CSBBM is capable of determining the optimal time of development of buildings with an accuracy of 80.77%. Practical implications - The hybrid model produces higher DOV than that of only the BM because MCS considers randomness in uncontrollable variables. Thus, building investment decision-makers should always use MCS to complement the BM in an investment analysis. Originality/value - There is limited evidence on the use of this kind of hybrid model for determining DOV in practice. - ItemAcademic Librarians Research Productivity amidst Open Access Resources: Issues and Challenges(2017-11) Musa, Aminu Umar; Sahabi, Mohammed Kabir; Dahiru, Lawal; Dauda, AmisheThis study explores the factor that influencing the use of open access resources for research productivity by academic librarians in federal universities in Northwestern States of Nigeria. Two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated and tested. Out of 200 copies of questionnaire distributed to academic librarians in federal universities in Northwestern States of Nigeria, a total of 174 (87%) copies were returned duly completed and found useable for the study. The data collected were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and percentages, while the hypothesis was tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The results indicated that factors such as access policy, accessibility to scholarly literature at no cost, visibility and increased citation rate among others were considered as important factors resolving to use open access resources. On research productivity of academic librarians there are lack of enabling environment, positive working area and good facilities, low level of education, skills, training and low level of motivation. In view of the above challenges the study therefore, concludes that not scarcity of information resources, neither lack of awareness of myriad benefits of Open Access information resource hindered research productivity among academic librarians in the area covered by the study, since most of the respondents attested to the various benefit attached to the utilization of Open Access Resources. Hence, while measures should be taken to strengthen the facilitating condition and policies to improve effective use of open access resources for better research productivity, much more emphasis should be focused toward ameliorating inhibiting challenges on research productivity such as enabling environment, cordial relationship and collaboration, positive attitude towards conducting research, motivation, overloading teaching schedule and tenure, education and training of academic librarians need to be given adequate attention.

- ItemAN APPRAISAL OF HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING PRACTICES OF SMALL AND MEDIUM CONSTRUCTION FIRMS(2019-08-08) ABUBAKAR, Muawiya DODO, Mansir ZAILANI, Muhammad Bello KAISIH, EzekielSmall and Medium construction firms constitute a large percentage of construction firms in developing countries, who in turn are the highest employers of construction labour. The safety of construction wokers on site is paramount to the overall success of the project as only when workers are in a sound state of mind and are physically healthy that work can go on efficiently. Safety training has been identified as one of the factors influencing safety performance in the construction industry. However, despite the emphasis on the need for effective health and safety practices, poor safety training practices in some segments of the construction industry have been observed by previous studies. This paper therefore, aims to appraise the health and safety training practices of small and medium construction firms in Nigeria. A purposive sampling technique was used to sample the study population. A quantitative research approach was adopted for this study. The tool used for data collection was a structured questionnaire which was distributed to safety managers and project managers in small and medium construction firms. Data colected was analysed using descriptive statistics whereby the mean was used as a basis to rank the factors studied. Results from analysis shows that despite these construction firms not having a written health and safety policy, they do actually engage in health and safety trainings. Furthermore, training for non-managers has been found to be given more priority in both small and medium construction firms studied as against training for managers. Training employees on the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)" ranked top amongst the most practiced safety training in both small and medium constructon firms. Small firms ranked PPE training. Orientation for all new hire as well as conducting training for every new job to be executed were both ranked high by small firms but ranked low by medium firms. The paper ultimately adds to the existing body of knowledge, and provides an insight to the practices of health and safety training in small and medium construction firms in Nigeria
- ItemAN ASSESSMENT OF SICK BUILDING SYNDROME IN KADUNA BANKING WORKPLACES(2011) MSHELGARU, I.H. DODO, M. - ItemAN ASSESSMENT OF THE BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES OF E-MARKETING AMONG FACILITIES MANAGEMENT FIRMS IN KADUNA(2018) ABDULAZEEZ, A.D. DODO, Mansir LABBO. M.S.Facilities Management (FM) is underpinned by integrating people, processes technology and the workplace. Since the advent of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), FM business delivery has been more effective similar to other business deliveries. Among other applications of ICT, electronic marketing (e-marketing) has been identified to enhance the business delivery operations in organisations. While such success of e-marketing is most often than not covers areas such as banking and manufacturing, there is need to explore the accorded successes e-marketing can accrue specific to FM. Hence, this study assessed e-marketing with a view to ascertain the benefits and challenges (of e-marketing) in FM delivery. Using judgmental sampling, data is collected from 75 organisations practicing FM in Kaduna with the aid of a structured questionnaire. The technique was 'drop and collect'. All 75 distributed questionnaires were successfully retrieved. Data is analysed descriptively using the mean and Relative Importance Index (RII) to Rank factors studied. Results reveal that out of the 8 identified benefits of e-marketing to FM, the most beneficial application of e-marketing to FM is its enhancing effectiveness of work and increasing job productivity. Similarly, out of 11 identified challenges of e-marketing to FM, the greatest challenge perceived by the respondents is that interacting with e-marketing tools require some mental effort. Findings reveal that although the respondents perceive e-marketing to FM to being beneficial to both the work and the employee (which by extension is beneficial to the organisation), the mental effort required to using e-marketing tools in FM serves as a great challenge. Therefore, although e-marketing in FM can be said to affect people, work processes and the workplace, the extent of the effect depends on the mechanism put in place to improve the efficiency ofFM service deliveiy (both the core and supporting businesses of an organisation). The implication of this study is for organisations to reap from the identified benefits and also mitigate the challenges of e-marketing towards effective FM sei-vice delivery.
- ItemAN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF NOISE ON STUDENTS IN THE MAIN LIBRARY OF UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA(2013) DODO, Mansir ABUBAKAR, M.The physical environment of a building should be within an optimal control level well enough to satisfy the needs of its occupants. Noise as a pollutant affects the productivity and morale of people. This paper investigates student's perception on the effects of noise in the Main Library of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Two hundred and sixty five students that come from over fifteen countries were surveyed. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data on student's perception to noise and its subsequent effect. Eta cross tabulation was used to establish relationships on the effects of noise and students perception. Results reveal positive relationships with small, medium and large categories of effects. Furthermore, while headache, feeling heavy headed and lack of concentration, were significantly related to student's perception, all other effects were not. As such, findings revealed that the more noise is perceived not manageable, the more its effect on headache, feeling heavy headed and lack of concentration towards the students. It was thus concluded that noise affects students in the library and can lower productivity in reading and learning of the students. The study recommends that sources of noise should be improved upon through adequate education and enforcement of library regulations.
