- ItemREINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN OF A PAIR OF BUNKERS FOR GRAINS(1978-06) AGIDAN1, SOLOMON UMORUThis thesis treats the design of a pair of bunkers, each having a capacity of 200 tons of maize, using the British code of practice CP 110 and the B.S. Cp 3 chapter five for loading (to compute wind load). As a guide to practical considerations some notes are given on such factors as filling and emptying procedures, minimum angle of hopper slope and so forth which should be of benefit to those who are meeting the subject for the first time, Elements of a bunker are classified in the same way as elements of other structures; they have been fully analysed and designs have been carried out accordingly. It should be emphasised that treatment of those things that make bunkers a peculiar kind of structure have been done but in no way exhaustive. Further research in future may reveal this, Acomparative cost analysis has been included for bunkers in steel and reinforced concrete to back up the choice of the use of reinforced concrete bunkers for small and medium sized installations. Conclusion and recommendations have been drawn and all authorities consulted have been acknowledged in the Bibliography and reference.

- ItemA CITATION ANALYSIS OF ENGINEERING LITERATURE CITED BY POST GRADUATE STUDENTS OF A.B.U ZARIA(1995) Ibrahim, UmarThis study applied citation analysis to the literature of Engineering with the sole aim of determining the core of journals used by Post-graduate Engineering students of A.B.U., Zaria. The sample of the study consists of sixty (60) theses representing 90% of the total number of theses produced between 1985 to 1990. The Bradford law was applied to give a core of the literature cited. The study revealed a total of 2,270 citations with journals receiving the highest citation of 927 (40.4%) Six periodical titles were identified as core with a total of 203 (21.907.) citation. The study also revealed that the small core of journal emanate from one single body-American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The study confirmed Waldhart— (1973) revelation that Engineers with academic affiliation cite a significantly higher proportion of journals while Engineers with, non-academic affiliation are more of technical report.

A.Sorghum genotypes were screened for resistance to Sporiosorium sorghi in the screenhouse and in the field. Scrccnhousc trials showed ICSV 2 and 1CSV 1049 to have considerable resistance while ICSV 1002 was completely immune. Field trials in 1994 and 1995 confirmed them to be resistant.
- ItemQUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF CURRENT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND PRODUCTIVITY IN I.A.R. AND N.A.P.R.I., ZARIA. NIGERIA.(1998) Ibrahim, UmarThe paper discusses research out-put as a live-wire to scientific and research institutions. It measures and correlates research contributions of scientists in Institute for Agricultural Research, Samaru, (I.A.R) and National Animal Production Research Institute, Shika, (N.A.P.R.I), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Fisher's T-test statistical techniques was employed to test the null hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the frequency of publication of scientists in I.A.R. and N.A.P.R.I. The paper concludes that I.A.R. and N.A.P.R.I. have made remarkable impact not only in the agricultural sector but also in the economy in general. Also, despite the fact that N.A.P.R.I. was carved out of I.A.R., there is no significant difference between the productivity of researchers in the two institutes.
- ItemManaging individual and organisational information needs in special libraries: the case of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria Technical Library.(1998-08) Ibrahim, UmarIn view of the information explosion and the complex information needs of management and individual within an organisation, libraries/information centres have a great role to play not only in identifying, selecting and disseminating those information that will be useful to management and individual but also in managing the information effectively. This paper, therefore propose to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) Zaria technical library, the use of management information (MI) as management techniques not only to ensure that the library is meeting the college objectives but also to create conditions, like research/working teams, strengthening informal communication and collaboration, that will nurture creativity.
- ItemCurrent Status of Sorghum Smuts in Nigeria(1999) PaulS, S. Marley; Daniel, A. AbaSurvey of farmers' fields in major sorghum growing areas within the four climatic zones of the Nigerian savanna established changing patterns in the incidence, severity and distribution of sorghum smuts. Covered smut (Sponsorium sorghi) although widely distributed, was found to be highly predominant in the Sudan (24.8%) and northern Guinea (29.5%) savanna. Loose smuts (Sphacehiheco cruenta) and long smuts (Tolxposporium ehrenbergii) were most prevalent in the Sahel savanna (21.8% and 15.5%, respectively). Head smut (Sporisorhtm reliamtm) was absent in the Sahel and Sudan, low in northern Guinea savanna zones, but was most predominant in the southern Guinea savanna. These smuts are economically important and continue to be a major biotic constraint in the effort to sustain high sorghum production levels.

- ItemAN INDEX TO, AND CHARACTERISTICS OF ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN THE JOURNAL OF LIBRARY FOCUS: 1983 - 1999(2001) Ibrahim, Umar; Abubakar, TijjaniThe paper discusses the importance of indexes, especially to long and fast growing journals like the library focus. An index to all articles published since inception to date is provided. Further more, an analysis of the index was conducted with the view to finding out the nature of the articles published, author-ship/author affiliation, subject groups and the type of research. The paper concludes that the result of researches in librarianship as published in the journal of library focus for the period under study has on the whole been rather theoretical and individualistic. The paper suggests a more strategic approach to publishing in the journal. Vision and mission statements were suggested and the need to emphasis more on research based articles was advocated.
- ItemASSESSMENT OF SORGHUM GENOTYPES FOR RESISTANCE TO FOLIAR ANTHRACNOSE (COLLETOTRICHUM GRAMINICOLA) UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS(2002) MARLEY, P.S.; Gupta, S. C.; Aba, D.A.One hundred and fifty nine (159) sorghum genotypes from the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), West African National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) and local collections were evaluated at Samaru, Nigeria for resistance to foliar anthracnose under field conditions during the 1996, 1997 and 1998 wet seasons. Disease reaction was observed six weeks after planting and disease severity assessed when plants had reached physiological maturity using a 1-9 visual rating scale. Results show that 42 genotypes showed resistant reaction while 20 and 97 genotypes showed moderately resistant and susceptible reactions respectively. Resistant genotypes included 14 ICRISAT sorghum varieties (ICSV), 4PB lines, 8 IS lines, 5 West African NARS lines, 2 SAMSORG varieties, 3NR varieties and 6 local varieties. Results herein indicate the availability of germplasm with stable resistance to foliar anthracnose. The need for assessment of these germplasm for panicle anthracnose resistance is highlighted
- ItemDIGITALIZED LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND SERVICES: AN OVERVIEW(2002) Ibrahim, UmarThe paper traces the historical development of library and information systems; from manual to automation, then to digitalization. The paper posits that, today, the convergence of Information and Technological revolutions has in effect turned libraries from "real" to "virtual" reality. Having highlighted the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of digitalized library and information systems, the paper concludes that, because digital information systems and services are not limited by size of resources, content, users, time and ownership, Nigerian libraries should embrace a digitalization policy
- ItemGENETIC VARIABILITY IN PLANT TYPES' OF SORGHUM {Sorghum bicolor (L.) MOENCH) DERIVED FROM GAMMA-RAY IRRADIATION(2002-09-09) ABA, D.A.; ALABI, S. O.Variability was created in an improved sorghum variety SK 5912 using gamma-ray irradiation (Cobalt source) 60 Co. The Mo seeds were advanced to My and from the M3 family selections were made of 34 lines based on medium height, disease free plants and good yields. These were advanced to M4 family lines. The M4 families were harvested and threshed and were divided into three equal portions for evaluation. The materials were evaluated in the Institute for Agricultural Research Farms for three years (1989, 1990 and 1991). The objective was to determine the variations resulting from the gamma-ray irradiation using the multivariate analysis procedure of factor analysis. Fhenotypic correlations were computed for the individual and combined years using the component, of variance and convariances. Principal component analysis , procedure was used to extract factors (TC) that account for the variations in the plant types of sorghum using the twenty two characters evaluated. In 1989 non-reproductive structures (II) photosynthetic) accounted for 5.75% of the total variations in F,, I" leaf sheath, Td intcrnode length, accounted for 2.24% of the total variation in F2. In 1990, the same nonreproductive structures (12) accounted for 5.51% of the total variations in F,, and only the lengths of leaf blades accounted for 2.72% of the variations in F2. In 1991 the lengths of five internodes accounted for 2. 75% of variation in F, while only lengtlis of the four leaf blades accounted for 2.25% of variations in F2. In the combined component analysis lengths of five internodes accounted for 4.96% of the total variation in F,, while lengtlis of three leaf blades, grain wt/spikelet and Days to 50% flowering accounted for 2.60% of the variation in F2. These results are useful in identifying the characters that give much variations and are correlated to the yield attributes, to be selected for in order to improve yield in the plant types, using recurrent selection procedure.
- ItemCHANGES, CHARACTERISTICS AND ANALYSIS OF INFORMATION CONTENTS OF QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF ADMINISTRATION(2003) Ibrahim, UmarThe Contents of Quarterly Journal of Administration (QJN) for the period of 25 years were analyzed to find out the nature of publication, authorship, editorial policy, etc. 630 contributions, out of which 400 (63:49%) articles and 230 (36:51 %) book/article review were made by 284 and 119 contributors respectively The analysis illustrates the conceptual, theoretical and methodological nature of research in Administration in Nigeria. It also shows that these researches have on the whole been individualistic and theoretical. The study concluded that there is the need to encourage collaboration among researchers in the area of Administration as well as diversification or researches into empirical and practical type of research. Finally, the study suggests among other things, the need to apply ISSN as well as sending copies for Indexing and Abstracting in Library and Information Science Abstracting (LISA).
- ItemUSE AND MISUSE OF REFERENCE SOURCES BY AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN KASHIM IBRAHIM LIBRARY(LIBRARY AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT FORUM, 2003) Suberu, Saka BamideleThe questionnaire fechnique was used to study the level of use and misuse of reference services in Kashim Ibrahim Library. (180) One hundred and eighty questionnaire were randomly administered to users of Reference Division of the library, 150(83%) were duly completed and returned to the researcher. The analysis shows that 10(6.7%) respondents had a good knowledge of the use of Reference materials. 90(60%) respondents had a fair know/edge of the use of reference materials, while 50 (33.3%) respondents had Average knowledge on how to use reference materials. The research reveals some problems tike students and staff inability to use the reference materials effectively; some of them lack patient, lack of lime and above all, the knowledge and ability to understand the method and techniques used in search strategy in Reference environment were identified. Recommendations have been made based on these results.
