- ItemA SURVEY OF THE ENGLISH COMMUNICATIVE NEEDS OF NCE/CC STUDENTS WITH SUGGESTIONS FOR PROGRAMME IMPROVEMENT(1968-01) ODUMUH, THERESA,; OHIABSIRACT The aim of this study was to survey the communication needs of students enrolled for the Nigeria Certificate in Education - by - Correspondence (NCE/CC) programme in the Institute of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, During the researcher's interaction with the students and in grading their assignments, it was observed that they were dissatisfied with the content of the General English course. In addition, their communicative ability was inadequate. This prompted the study. The study was designed to find out what the students considered as their communicative needs in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills. Three questionnaires were administered to years I and IV students and their lecturers to collect information in this respect. On the whole, eighty-eight year I students, sixty-six year IV Students and fourteen lecturers participated in the study. The results were analysed using frequencies and percentages. The results revealed that the four language skills were rated high to moderate need for a teacher that uses English for instruction. The majority of year I students and the lecturers perceived most of the skills as high needs of the students at the point of entry. Skills highly emphasised by these two groups are as follows: Listening skills including ability to: - Take down meaningful notes. - Contrast English phonemes. - Recognise meanings of words, phrases and sentences .Caused by stress and intonation viii Speaking skills including ability to: - Pronounce consonants. - Stress words and sentences appropriately, Reading skills including ability to: - Find specific information quickly from material read. - Understand, interprete, summarize material of various topics. Writing Skill including ability to: - Plan and write Essays, of various types using appropriate format. Unlike the year I students and the lecturers, the year students perceived most of the skills as moderate needs. However, they indicated high need in the area of writing, particularly ability to: - Write various types of Essays. - Develop paragraphs in chronological form. - Use punctuation marks correctly. In the light of the findings, it was recommended that needs of each set of new entrants should be sought using a needs assessment procedure. The teachers should also monitor the students needs as they progress through the programme to know what needs are satisfied and what remains to be done. In respect of year IV students who perceived most of the skills as moderate needs it was recommended that they still need help particularly in writing.
- ItemEXPORT FINANCING BY MERCHANT BANKS IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF ICON LIMITED MERCHANT BANKERS)(1968-11) MISBAHUDDEEK, Umar YolaThis project chose to define what export financing is and how it is done. It studied how ICON Limited (Merchant Bankers' carries out export financing activities in Nigeria towards boosting the export drive in the country. The strategies employed by the bank and the problems encounted by the bank were analysed and evaluated. Ar. attempt was made to define who the exporter is (and what exports are), the types of exporters, the risks of international trade, the types of export financing facilities available to exporters, the methods of trade payments and the role banks play in the field of export financing. Based on the analysis of data, some conclusions were, drawn and recommendations put forward as to how to make the export financing activities of ICON Limited and indeed other banks in Nigeria more effective. Scheme of Study:The work is divided into four chapters with the first chapter dealing with introduction of the problem, the study itself. its limitations and the research methodologyemployed. Chapter two dealt with the literature review. Export financing at ICON Limited was treated in chapter three, while summary, conclusions and recommendations were put in chapter four.

- ItemA D V E R B I A L ADJUNCTS : A Critical consideration of work on their Classification(1971-05) MOHMED, ALIYUABSTRACT This study is conoerned with some of the problems of classifying adverbial adjuncts in English, It attempts to investigate the primary function of English adverbial adjuncts, and, on that basis, to isolate the properties which uniquely distinguish adverbial adjuncts from the rest of the major classes of English. Chapter one relates the problem of delimiting adverbial adjuncts to the wider problem of objectively classifying the 'parts of speech1 that characterise the English Language. A brief survey of scholarly opinion connected with this problem is given to help evolve an oolcotio and, it is hoped, pedagogioally rewarding scheme for classifying adverbial adjuncts and related classes. Chapter two examines various attempts by grammarians to cope with the problem of identifying or defining adverbs. It also investigates the nature and scope of adverbial modification and in particular tries to establish the difference between the adjunctive functions of adjectives and adverbs. Chapter three studies the form of adverbial adjuncts, their morphological structure, and how this is related to or derives from their primary function as adjunctive modifiers. Chapter four attempts a sub-olassifioation of adverbial adjuncts drawing extensively upon existing work on the subject, commenting on it and suggesting alternative, less fragmented solutions. It tries to draw attention to the basic similarity between what on the surface might appear to be conflicting views due to differences in terminology and approach, and than attempts to synthesize, them. Chapter five concludes the dissertation by setting down two criteria for isolating adverbial adjuncts (oriterion of omissibility and criterion of optionality) and a minor criterion (gradability) for distinguishing between 'word-modifying' and sentence-modifying' adjuncts. It also tentatively explores the possible rhetorical or stylistic value of adverbial adjuncts, their purposeful use for effective communication. Finally, a bibliography containing most of the works oonsulted and sources oited in the course of the dissertation is given at the end.

- ItemTHE STUDY OF THE ATTITUDES TOWARDS INITIATING GUIDANCE SERVICES IN THE POST-PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ONDO STATE OF NIGERIA(1977-06) AKINTADE, JONATHAN,; BANDELEA B S T R A C T This study sets out to determine attitudes toward the i n i t i a t i o n of guidance services in post primary schools in Ondo State of Nigeria. The study has surveyed the post primary institutions in the State, collected relevant data from forms four and five students, administrators of schools, government officials, teachers and parents to exploit the possibility of i n i t i a t i ng guidance services in the St-ate. The study sets out with questions vhich have been answered and deal with the attitudes of administrators of schools in Ondo State to the scheme of i n i t i a t i n g guidance services; the attitudes of the students, the teachers, the public and the parents; and the government about providing funds. The r e s u l t s were analysed by the use of percentages for the opinion poll and as expressed in the questionnaires. This showed a high positive support toward i n i t i a t i ng guidance services in Ondo State. The government, too, is willing to provide funds to establish the scheme. It is therefore recommended to set up some machinery in the Ministry of Education, Akure, Ondo State to work out the d e t a i l s of the programme,
- ItemMANPOWER DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIAN FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS: A CASE STUDY OF AFRIBANK NIGERIA PLC, KADUNA(1977-08) ODUNZE, Emmanujel KanayochukwuThrough a case study of the Afribank Pic, Kaduna, this study examines Manpower Development in Nigerian Financial Institutions. Financial institutions form a major intermediary through which Government delivers its economic responsibilities to the citizens. Therefore, the effectiveness and efficiency of the Financial Institutions have a direct impact on the economic health/ of the citizens and it could be a parameter for measuring the effectiveness of the government too. Since the calibre of manpower resource available to any organisation has a direct effect on the organisation's performances, the importance Of Manpower Development can never be overemphasised. The study, through the survey method, was carried out through consultation of relevant published materials, personal interviews and administration of questionnaires. The study reveals, among other things, that the manpower Development programmes of Afribank Pic, Kaduna need to be improved in order to meet the customers' and the Bank employees' expectations more effectively. A number of flaws in the planning and execution of the programme were identified. Recommendations were also made which if carried out, would make for the improvement of the Manpower Development of Afribank Pic, Kaduna in particular and Nigerian Financial Institutions in general.
- ItemA STUDY OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PRIMARY EDUCATION IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMME (SCIENCE) IN CLASSES ONE AND TWO OF SELECTED SCHOOLS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA(1978) BROWN, DESMOND,; PATRICKABSTRACT Under the Primary Education Improvement Project, work on science materials for the primary school began in 1970. Two teachers' guides entitled Primary Science One and Two and workbooks for the children had been produced in published form by 1975. Some formative evaluation had taken place during the writing of these materials but this was not as thorough as it should have been because of staff shortagese No study had been made of the effect the programme was having on the childrenc "This study involved evaluating the attainment of the science objectives in terms of the children's ability to practice process skills. It also attempted to measure children's interest, active participation and understanding of the lessons, as well as the availability of materials and ease of preparing and teaching the lessons for the teachers." Data was collected by means of teacher opinionnaires and a children's test to measure the attainment of process skills. The teachers who completed the opinionnaires rated the programme as successful in terms of all the measured criteria. The study revealed that some teachers were not teaching science because of lack of science competency and a shortage of science materials. Children in PEIP and non-PEIP schools were tested with iii the process test and their performances were compared. The results indicated that there were some significant differences in total test scores in favour of the children in PEIP schools after one year of primary school, but none after two years© Girls in PEIP schools seemed to profit more than the boys in terms of an improved ability to practice process skills. It was recommended that greater attention be given to the proper training of PEIP teachers and to supplying adequate science materials to the schools, as these two factors seemed to be the main limitations on the programme's success.

- ItemAN EXPLORATORY STUDY OF ADULT EDUCATION: A CASE FOR AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY(1979) Chineme, Philippa O.Abstract An Exploratory Study of Adult Education: A Case for Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The idea to conduct this study originated from a survey which was conducted by the Department of Adult Education, Centre for Adult Education Ahmadu Bello University in 1978. Most universities' adult education component is usually an extension arm of the university which services the community in which it is situated. Rarely are they concerned with the status of adult education among its members of staff. The purpose of this study has therefore been to determine to what extent the entire -personnel of Ahmadu Bello University avail themselves of educational opportunities available and also to determine what factors either economic, social or personal, are important determinants to participation in adult education programmes. A randomly selected sample of 300 members of staff who were cpmprised 114 members of junior staff, 63 members of intermediate staff and 96 members of senior staff was used in the study. i Data was collected using a Liekert-type questionnaire which was administered to the respondents either through the campus mail or through face to face contact. Treatment of the data was by (a) simple percentages and (b) by the chi square test which was tested at the significant level of α = .05. The main hypothesis tested was that participation in adult education programmes was highly dependent on its perception as a means of promotion in one's career. The significance of this hypothesis was considered as it related to the three occupational status in the university, namely; junior, intermediate and senior staff. The results have revealed that the three occupational groups differ in their primary reasons for participation in adult education programmes. The reasons have ranged from (l) means for economic advancement (2) acquisition op requirements for higher education through (3) the need to make professional impact in one's field. The findings also indicate that more staff members who have had 14 years of education or more are involved in adult education programmes. Therefore of the three levels of education, the rank orders of their importance to participation in adult education programmes are as follows: ii (1) the university level, (2) primary level and (3) the secondary level. This investigator contends that the study would be of immense value to the University especially the Staff Development Section whose main objective is the development of the entire staff and also to the Centre for Adult Education and Extension Services of the university who provide and coordinate programmes for adults. Finally some recommendations have been made based on the results of the study.

- ItemSTATUS OF THE VOLUNTARY AGENCY POST-PRIMARY INSTITUTIONS IN KADUNA STATE AFTER THE GOVERNMENT TAKE-OVER(1980) KATSINA, RABEH GAJIRIABSTRACT Title: Status of the Voluntary Agency Post-Primary Institutions in Kaduna State After the Government Take-Over Statement of the Problem: The study sought to ascertain the status of the present post-primary schools (formerly owned by Voluntary Agencies) in Kaduna State. with special reference to the implementation of the recommendations made by the government committee, and the effectiveness of principals in running these schools by analyzing their (principals) leader behavior. Research Methods and Statistical Treatment: The study made use of the normative survey method. There were two forma of questionnaires used in the study: to collect data about extent of implementation of recommendations, and the Leader Behavior Questionnaire designed to collect data on the perceptions of principals and teachers about leader behavior. Research Samples: The study involved 10 principals and 150 teachers in the ten randomly selected postprimary institutions in Kaduna State during the academic session 1978-1979. The "hat-draw" method was used in the random selection of institutions and teacher-respondents of the study. The various data gathered for the study were subjected to statistical treatment which included tallying, averaging, percentage, ranking and the use of Chi-square test. Findings; An analysis of the data gathered resulted in the findings from which basic conclusions were drawn. Recommendationss In the light of the findings in these study recommendations were offered. BY CORRESPONDENCE PROGRAMME RUN BY THE INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA(1980-06) GIWA, FESTUS IBITOYEABSTRACT N.C.E. by correspondence programme is an innovation in the Nigerian educational system, in that it is the first of its kind for producing N.C.E, teachers in Nigeria through in-service type of teacher education, Tnis study, therefore, attempts to appraise the organisation and administration of this programme for the purpose of identifying its strong points and weaknesses which may likely affect either positively or negatively the chances of achieving the objectives of the programme. The study is divided into five chapters. Chapter one deals with a background information about N.C.E. by correspondence programme, the need for in-service teacher education and evaluation of such a programme in Nigeria and the problem which the study attempts to solve. Chapter two deals with the review of literature. Chapter three shows the design and procedure of the study. Chapter four deals with the data analysis and results, while chapter five deals with the summary, conclusion, recommendations and areas for further study in the programme. There is no doubt that there is need for a formative evaluation of a programme like the N.C.E. (cc). Such an appraisal will make it possible to identify problems militating against the success of such a programme, for which recommendations for their solutions will eventually be made.

- ItemTHE STRUCTURE, ORGANIZATION AND FUNCTIONS OF THE INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION OF AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY ZARIA(1980-09) ADINLEWA, JOSEPH O.A B S T R A C T The writer wrote his Intership report on the structure, organization and functions of the I n s t i t u te of Education Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The purpose of the Intership was to f u l f i l one of the requirements for the award of Master of Education Degree in Educational Planning and Administration by Faculty of Education Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. During an intership, the intern learned p r a c t i c a l ly those aspects of administration and planning that he was taught theoretically in the classroom. The intern studied the I n s t i t u t e of Education which employed 666 workers and 3385 students who were undergoing various courses. In order to be able to carry out the duties assigned to her, the I n s t i t u te of Education has been divided into the following nine divisions namely: Primary Division, Secondary Division, Teachers1 Education Division, Languages Division, Art and Materials Development Division, Test Research and Measurement Division and Library Division. In addition to these divisions, there were two sections for Genera1 Administration and the Finance of the I n s t i t u te of Education. Each of these divisions and sections had certain specific roles to play. For instance, the Primary Division was responsible for training primary school administrators and teachers who were specialized in I n f a n t Methodology. This Division also took care of Primary Education Improvement Project (PEIP), Primary Science a nd Primary Social Science. The Division of Secondary Education was in charge of Long Vacation Programmes while the Teachers' Education Division took care of National Certificate in Education and Teachers' Grade II C e r t i f i c a t e . The Division of Languages took care of four languages viz. English, Hausa, Arabic and French. The Division of Research, Test and Measurement took care of Consultancy Services Supervision of Research Programme Collection and Analysis of compar a t i v e v i t a 1 educational s t a t i s t i c s , editing of research papers for publication in the I n s t i t u t e ' s sponsored Journals and conducting the Interim Joint Matriculation examination (IJMB). On the other hand the Division of Art and Materials Development concentrated i t s attention on curriculum development in Art and the development of Audio-Visual Aids. The Division of Library offered services to the I n s t i t u t e of Education as well as the ten northern states of Nigeria. The net two sections tourched were the General Administrative set up or the I n s t i t u t e and the Inst i t u t e ' s Finance, The administrative section of the I n s t i t u t e of Education controlled a l l the a c t i v i t i es of the I n s t i t u t e as far as administration was concerned From the staff of Administrative section, administrative officers were appointed as secretaries to various committees and boards e.g. I n s t i t u t e Board of Governors, Professional and Academic Boards, Promotions and Appointment Committee, Heads of Divisions' Meetings, Board of Survey, Minor Committee, Zaria Area Tender Board, Publication Committee and so on. The I n s t i t u t e Finance S ection was concerned with the payment of workers' s a l a r i e s , preparation of invoices loans advances, expenditures and revenue. The Finance section was divided into four main sections: 1. The Finance Officer's Office, 2. The Headquarter Finance Office 3. Revenue and Expenditure 4. Loan Advances/Students Account. Through divisional meetings genera 1 staff meetings, meeting of heads of division, Advisory Committee, Publication Committee and Consultation with the Professional and Academic Board and Board of Governors, the I n s t i t u t e of Education was able to discharge i t s duties aa required by the university. The various meetings and committees created forum for exchange of ideas and coordination of a c t i - v i t i e s from a l l parts of the I n s t i t u t e of Education. The administrative structure and organizational set up of the I n s t i t u t e of Education were very up to date. Inspite of t h i s , there was need to control the movement of workers, especially the messengers and c l e r i c al s t a f f during working hours. The system of circulating informations from one division to the other was found inadequate and suggestions were made to improve the existing conditions. These suggestions included orientation for new employees, employment of l i t e r a te messengers, security guards and publication and the c i r c u l a t i on of Newsletters to pass informations to the I n s t i t u t e workers.
