- ItemELECTRONIC SECURITY SYSTEM: A PANACEA TO SECURITY RISKS IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA(2018) DAHIRU, Salisu; GARBA, Ali; MOHAMMED, HamzaFor effective teaching and learning to take place in the academic institutions of Nigeria particularly in this digital era, there should be a functional library with adequate security measures put in place to secure and protect library’s resources, system and services against the consequences of risks. The paper examined the concept of security risks and security risks management. It also highlighted the applications of electronic security systems such as electronic theft detection system, electronic access control system and explosive detection system in security risk management in academic libraries in Nigeria. The paper identified the advantages of each security system to the academic libraries in Nigeria. Barriers to the use of electronic security system in academic libraries such as erratic power supply, inadequate expert to manage the systems were also highlighted. Recommendations were also made based on the barriers identified such as provision of alternative sources of electric power supply such as solar panels, stand-by generators, inverters, accumulators, wind electricity, etc; space provision in the architectural design of the libraries; training and retraining of library staff/security managers on how to manage the systems among others.
