- ItemAcademic Librarians Research Productivity amidst Open Access Resources: Issues and Challenges(2017-11) Musa, Aminu Umar; Sahabi, Mohammed Kabir; Dahiru, Lawal; Dauda, AmisheThis study explores the factor that influencing the use of open access resources for research productivity by academic librarians in federal universities in Northwestern States of Nigeria. Two research questions and one hypothesis were formulated and tested. Out of 200 copies of questionnaire distributed to academic librarians in federal universities in Northwestern States of Nigeria, a total of 174 (87%) copies were returned duly completed and found useable for the study. The data collected were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and percentages, while the hypothesis was tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The results indicated that factors such as access policy, accessibility to scholarly literature at no cost, visibility and increased citation rate among others were considered as important factors resolving to use open access resources. On research productivity of academic librarians there are lack of enabling environment, positive working area and good facilities, low level of education, skills, training and low level of motivation. In view of the above challenges the study therefore, concludes that not scarcity of information resources, neither lack of awareness of myriad benefits of Open Access information resource hindered research productivity among academic librarians in the area covered by the study, since most of the respondents attested to the various benefit attached to the utilization of Open Access Resources. Hence, while measures should be taken to strengthen the facilitating condition and policies to improve effective use of open access resources for better research productivity, much more emphasis should be focused toward ameliorating inhibiting challenges on research productivity such as enabling environment, cordial relationship and collaboration, positive attitude towards conducting research, motivation, overloading teaching schedule and tenure, education and training of academic librarians need to be given adequate attention.
- ItemAn Appraisal of Open Access Utilization among Academic Librarians in Federal Universities in Northwestern States of Nigeria(Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal), 2016-02-09) Musa, Aminu UmarWith the proliferation of literature on Open access (OA), extensive literature can be found focusing on issues relating to OA publishing from the viewpoint of libraries and publisher, very little have been done on issues influencing authors’ adoption and use of OA by academic librarians in Northern Nigeria. This study investigated the utilization of OA among academic librarians in Northwestern States of Nigeria. The findings from the study revealed that majority of the respondents indicated high level of awareness of OA publications concept but posses little Knowledge about OA initiatives. The study also discovered that librarians use OA resources and give priority to it when sourcing materials for their work. The study further revealed that inadequate funding for building and upgrading ICT infrastructure, unstable power supply and slow Internet connection (bandwidth) among others were the major factors militating against the use of OA resources. It is therefore, recommended that advocacy on OA initiatives have become imperative to encourage librarians publishing via OA models. Finally, adequate funding is seriously needed for building and upgrading ICT infrastructure in the academic institutions. This will go a long way in encouraging academic librarians to exploit fully the benefit of Open Access and also to contribute tothe body of literature by publishing via Open Access models.
- ItemDeposition Mandate to Self-Archiving Practices among Academic Librarians in the Northwestern States of Nigeria: Benefit and Challenges(2016-05-31) Musa, Aminu Umar; Sahabi, Muhammad Kabir; Lawal, DahiruThe paper examines self-archiving practices among academic librarians in Northwestern States of Nigeria. The population for the study consists of 200 academic librarians in the area covered by the study. A total enumeration technique was adopted as sampling strategy where the entire population was considered as sample. Questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. Out of the 200 copies of questionnaire distributed to the respondents, a total of 174 (87%) were returned duly completed and found useable for the study. The data collected were analyzed descriptively, using frequency distribution tables and percentages. The findings indicated that majority of the respondents publish their research through printed media than electronic. The finding of the study revealed that majority of the respondents indicated their mandate to deposit their intellectual output via institutional repositories and other open access outlets. The study further discovered that the main factors that motivate academic librarians to self-archive their publications was to benefit from varying impact of open access, which includes, wider research visibility, increased citation rate and research collaboration. In addition, the study revealed that low level of awareness about self-archiving practices, lack of institutional policy on self-archiving, perception of Institutional Repository (IR) contents as of lower quality, fear of plagiarism among other were reported as obstacles that affect self-archiving practices. It is therefore, recommended that academic librarians need to encourage university management to formulate policies that would encourage academic staff to self-archive their work in the IR through application of appropriate mechanism for reward and punishment “carrot and stick”. There is also the need for sensitization campaign on publisher licensing clauses and copyright issues. Lastly, academic librarians should also encourage university management to finance, support and promote open access project and initiatives in the institutions covered by the study.
