The extracts of root bark, stem bark and leaf of Erythrina senegalensis DC, a shrub which grows in the Savannah regions of West Africa and traditionally used to treat jaundice, lever, dysentery, gonorrhoea and in healing wounds, have been chemically investigated and tested for microbial activity. Phytochemical analyses carried out on the methanol extracts of the root bark, stem bark and leaf showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, steroidal nucleus, and tlavonoids. The extracts were active against Bacillus sublilis, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Extraction of fraction suspected to be rich in sapogenins using petroleum ether and ethylacetate was carried out to determine the active components of the plant. The ethylacetate extract was active in the Shrimp Lethality Bioassay, and yielded, on purification, four isolates coded ESEASG 1, ESEASG 2, ESEASG 3, and ESEASG 4 respectively. The four isolates inhibited the growth of Bacillus sublilis while ESEASG 1 and 4 showed activity on Staphylococcus aureus in the antimicrobial assay On the basis of IR and UV spectra and m.pt (uncorr) values. ESEASG 2 and -1 were suspected to be isomeric.en_US
