Abstract
The paper examined the essence of educational institution libraries, the place of institutional and programme accreditation, the role of libraries in institutional and programme accreditation, and advance reasons why educational institution libraries need to be periodically accredited by an accreditation body. Library accreditation indicators were proposed. It concluded that considering the relevance of libraries in educational institutions, they need to be externally assessed periodically to determine their readiness and competence to support and respond effective and efficiently to the continued changing milieu of the institutions' strategic areas of interest.
