Tephrosia bracteolata is a legume widely spread in the Northern and Southern states of Nigeria and commonly known as "Kimi or Shege" in Hausa and "Roro" in Yoruba. The plant is employed as a fodder for animals and for various medicinal purposes, especially as a pain killer. Hence, the present pharmacological studies were carried out on the plant leaves. The crude extract of the leaves of Tephrosia bracteolata, which was found to be nontoxic (LD50 > 5,000), induced a dose-dependent contractile response in guinea pig ileum. It possesses no significant antimicrobial activity, but contains a potent analgesic principle. The most effective dose for the analgesic activity was 400 mg/kg. The crude extract was also found to possess a potent antipyretic activity at a dose of 600 mg/kg, which compared very favourably with that of the standard drug, aspirin. The anti-inflammatory studies revealed that the crude extract inhibited inflammation. At a dose of 800 mg/kg body weight, the inhibition of a carrageenan induced oedema two (2) hours post-induction was 57 percent compared to the 40 percent inhibition by the standard anti-inflammatory drug, indomethacin. The plant extract did not potentiate barbiturate sleeping time, thus; the plant extract contains principles ossessing a potent non-narcotic analgesic, with both antipyretic and anti-inflammatory, properties.en_US
