- ItemGOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT FINANCING IN NIGERIA (1976-84) (THE CASE OF NIGER STATE)(1984-09) IDRIS, Aliyu K.Industrial development finance institutions in Nigeria are basically established to finance promotion of specific projects particularly the ones which can not easily be financed by small privately owned institutions. They (development finance institutions) prove to be industrial development machinery in Nigeria and elsewhere. Governments, world over through the aid of industrial development finance institutions are therefore focusing efforts towards accelerating and increasing industrial activities in their countries of origin as these activities are considered to be the basis for achieving an improved living standard. Dancing to the same tune moreover Nigeria, Niger State in particular has been earmarking substantial amounts for the purpose during her development plan periods. Despite her numerous industrialization efforts however, Niger State is still found to oe one of the least industrialized States in the country. The prime intent of this research therefore is to critically assess the Niger State Government efforts in this direction with a view to surfacing with some inhibiting factors Various research methods including among others Interviewing and sampling were employed to achieve this end. Analysis of - viii - research findings depicts that reductionism, rigidity and procrastination that characterised the State Government various functionaries are part of the factors inhibiting rapid industrial development in the State. The report hitherto attempts some basic recommendations for the improvement of the situation in the Stats. The recommendations broadly include among others:- (a) Provision of general industrial incentives in the State; (b) Educating and demonstrating to the industrialists in the State the techniques of investments; (c) Reviewing of the government current land rents and fees; (d) Setting-up of a bank essentially for the financing of industrial ventures in the State.
