- ItemCLOUD COMPUTING PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES FOR NIGERIAN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES(2013-06) Gbaje, Ezra Shiloba; DAUDU, H.MThere is a rapid growth in the development and use of Information Technology in Nigeria resulting to digital savvy library patrons, who expect that library resources and services to be automated so that they can enjoy the library services remotely. With poor Information Technology infrastructure, servers, storage application, inadequate IT skilled librarians and cost, library automation has been a challenge for many academic libraries. Cloud computing offers the opportunities to provide library patrons with library and information services hereto would have been impossible This paper examine the prospect of cloud computing particularly Software as a Service (SaaS) a nomenclature of cloud computing and challenges in its adoption for the management of Library resources. The paper concludes that adoption of cloud computing for library • automation is will no doubt make library automation cheaper and more affordable to many academic libraries, hence the recommendation for its adoption.
- ItemDILEMMA OF REPOSITIONING LIBRARY SERVICES FOR QUALITY EDUCATION, ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES(2014-08) DAUDU, H.M; Kasa, M.G.Library services promote diversity and the only arena where wishes and needs of information resources are catered for. The objectives of the paper aimed at identifying dilemmas that preclude libraries from providing effective services. Survey research method is employed to extract information from 330 library patrons selected at random. The instrument for data collection centred on the factors capable of contributing to quality education and access to information Descriptive statistics and a decision rule were relied upon for analysis. The results revealed that major dilemma affecting repositioning of library services was inadequate funding (89%) of libraries, whereas means scores rates significant include access, retrieval and use of information resources (2.71) and slow response by university management to library plight, consequently affecting library as its vital organ (2.50). It recommends a functional feedback mechanism to collate identified dilemmas to proactively engage stakeholders to achieve the goals and objectives of the library.

However, this paper gives examples of women who have been exceptional, and have actively participated in public life. Some of them have been involved in actual warfare. The Writer'has described the discrimination against women in Nigeria and other parts of the world .Then she pointed out that women should promote peace and be more active in fighting for their rights, and societal ills such as secret cults ,discase , sexual harassment than taking part in physical combat. The paper concludes by pointing out that efforts arc being made at national and international levels to enhance women participation in public life, and so women should not rest on their oars but fight the war of freedom from exploitation and discriminatory policies
- ItemThe Role of School Library Media Centre in the Management of Education Resources(2001-08) DAUDU, H.MThe paper stalled by assessing ihc term "Media Centre" that is currently in sonic quarters used in place of School Library. The functions of the media center were enumerated. Using the resources provided at the centre, the paper discussed what both teachers, curriculum planners and students can benefit, from the media center. The paper gave a run-down of what would be required to establish school libraries. Among the requirements apart from materials, personnel requirement was discussed. The paper agreed with other writers that a professional is required. Finally, the paper discussed the monitoring role of the ERC vis-a-vis its position in promoting Library services in schools.
- ItemSCHOOL LIBRARIANSHIP AND ITS PLACE IN NIGERIAN EDUCATION: THE CASE OF ZARIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT EDUCATION AUTHORITY, KADUNA STATE(2014-09) DAUDU, H.MThis paper titled School Librarianship and its place in Nigerian Education is a research pape on the availability of school libraries in Zaria Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) As one of the education services to be offered in schools, the National Policy on Education particular about the provision of libraries in schools and the training of librarians and library assistants for effective services. Four objectives were set to find out the availability of libraries, to identify qualification of staff to find out the types of resources and how functional the libraries are. Survey research method was used to describe the state of school libraries in Zaria. The population was made up of all the 116 schools in six (6) districts of Zaria Local Government Education Area. The whole population was used for the study. Instrument for data collection was questionnaire, interview and document assessment. Descriptive statistics and a decision rule were relied upon for analysis. The results revealed that most schools don 7 have libraries as only 27 (23.3%) have libraries and only two (2) staff have professional qualification. Only one (1) library has a significant level (2.50) of functionality. It was recommended that provision of school libraries should be made mandatory for primary schools, and professional staff should be provided to render service, that this can be achieved through sending teachers for training in the area of librarianship. Learning resources that prepare the ground for lifelong education should be made available to primary school pupils.
- ItemTeacher-Librarian Collaboration in Developing Favourable Reading Culture in Nigerian Primary Schools(2012-11) DAUDU, H.MThis paper is an off-shoot from class discussion on the issue of poor reading ability and habit of primary school pupils. This discussion was in a course titled "School Information Systems and Services" taken by undergraduate students of Library and Information Science, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. Two sets of students were used for this study. Fifty (50) students from the regular programme and seventy (70) from the part-time programme who are mostly teachers in their various schools were used for the study. These students were from different localities in the country; hence, they were a representation of all the geopolitical zones of Nigeria. The research was guided by three (3) questions which assisted in eliciting information that can be used to encourage the use of school media centres to develop a reading culture in Nigerian schools. Before a reading culture can be inculcated in children, books have to be made available. Suggestions were made on how teachers and librarians can collaborate in developing reading culture in school children. Prominent among them is that teachers should send children to the library for specific assignments and librarians should make resources available for the specific assignments. Parents were also found out to be vehicles through which reading in school children can be accelerated. At the end of this paper, a suggested list of supplementary readers was made for use in primary and secondary schools to develop reading culture in children.
- ItemTEACHERS' PERCEPTION OF DIPLOMA IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE CURRICULUM AND SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE IT CONFORM TO ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS(2012-07) DAUDU, H.MThe study on teachers' perception of Diploma in Library and Information Science (DLIS) curriculum of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was conducted to find out whether it conforms to entrepreneurial skills. This is becaue the programme has grown so popular that it has produced large number of students who find it difficult to secure white collar jobs after graduation because of the keen competition in the world of jobs. Two research questions guided the researcher. Survey research design was used in carrying out the study while questionnaire that was validated by senior lecturers and above of Library and Information Science was used as instrument for data collection. Four-point Likert-scale instrument with midpoint for the scale as 2.50 was used. The study revealed mean rating of the overall perception of the lecturers as 2.11 which is below 2.50 and therefore, it was concluded that the curriculum is inadequate and irrelevant to entrepreneurial skills acquisition. It was recommended that the curriculum be reviewed to include infusion of entrepreneurial skills
- ItemTHE USE OF SCHOOL LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES FOR SUPPORTING EDUCATION IN THE FACE OF GLOBAL ECONOMIC CHALLENGE(2011-07) DAUDU, H.MThis paper is a research paper trying to find out the level of provision of school libraries and information services in primary schools in four Local Government Areas of Kaduna State. One hundred and sixteen (116) schools were randomly selected out of 577 public schools in the four Local Government Areas. Questionnaire was used to collect data. The questionnaire was administered to all the head teachers of the sampled schools. The study found that only 22 schools (18.96%) have libraries. Examining the types of materials in the libraries, textbooks ranked highest with 16 (13. 79%) libraries while no library had films strips and slides. As for the highest qualification of the librarians, most libraries were managed by primary school leavers (cleaners) while some libraries had nobody directly managing them. However, two schools had Diploma in Library Science holder and one school had a degree holder managing the library. The schools had very poor ways of funding their libraries. 'The writer recommends that primary schools need to have libraries because that is where the foundation for the use of library later in life is laid. The writer further recommends that Local Government Education Authorities as well as the schools and the old pupils associations of schools team up to provide libraries in primary schools. In the interim, teachers who must have taken the use of libraries course at N.C.E level should attempt introducing children to the use of library using the class library.
