dc.description.abstract | Weather induced diseases have been a major public health problem and a hindrance to socio economic development in Ankpa LGA of Kogi State. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of rainfall, temperature and relative humidity on the occurrence of selected diseases, namely malaria, typhoid, meningitis, pneumonia and diarrhea in Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State. Records of rainfall, temperature and relative humidity were obtained from the weather station at the Kogi State College of Education Ankpa, and the records of reported cases of the selected diseases were obtained from selected hospitals from 2006 to 2015. These records were used to carry out this study. Time series analysis was used to analyze the trend of each of the data collected, Pearson product moment correlation analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the five diseases and the climatic parameters. The seasonal occurrence of the diseases was analyzed by dividing the year into hot dry, rainy and cold dry seasons. The analysis showed that rainfall, relative humidity, malaria, typhoid, and diarrhea exhibited decreasing trends, while temperature, meningitis and pneumonia showed an increasing trend within the period of 2006 to 2015. The correlation analysis indicated that the five selected diseases are influenced differently by the various weather elements. Rainfall showed a positive relationship with malaria typhoid and diarrhea having r-values of 0.595, 0.167 and 0.544 and a negative relationship with meningitis and pneumonia having r-values of -0.285 and -0.144 respectively. Temperature showed a positive relationship with typhoid and meningitis having r-values of 0.087 and 0.305 and a negative relationship with malaria, pneumonia and diarrhea with r-values of -0.214, -0.041 and -0.533 respectively. Relative humidity showed a positive relationship with diarrhea with r-value of 0.472 and showed a negative relationship with malaria, typhoid, meningitis xv and pneumonia having r-values of -0.115, -0.297, -0.542 and -0.438 respectively. The seasonal analysis showed that within the study period, malaria, typhoid and diarrhea had the highest reported cases during the rainy season while meningitis and pneumonia occurred highest during the hot dry and cold dry seasons respectively. The forecast showed that rainfall and relative humidity will be on the decrease up till 2025 while temperature will be on the increase. Consequently, malaria and diarrhea will be on the decrease while typhoid, meningitis and pneumonia will be on the increase. The study concludes that weather has profound influence on the rate of occurrence of the five selected diseases in the study area. Based on the findings of this research, the study recommends that proper town planning should be ensured by the town planning board, proper drainage channels should be constructed, sensitization programs should be organized to educate residents on climate change influences, provision of potable drinking water should be made, vaccines should be provided for immunization, mosquito nets should be provided and a study of this nature should be carried out yearly. | en_US |
