Abstract
In many reactors, there are both control rods and shutdown or safety rods with the latter specifically designed for rapid shutdown of the chain reaction. But Nigeria Research Reactor 1 (NIRR-1), which is a Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR) has only one control rod which serves the purpose of both reactivity control and shutdown of the reactor. This work present a modeling of the eccentric control rod (ECR), which will be an important safety measure in the MNSR and will provide another alternative way to shutdown the reactor in an emergency. The codes WIMS and CITATION were used to model the ECR within the annular beryllium reflector with cadmium as an absorber material. The following reactor core physics parameters were determined: thickness of the ECR 1.25cm, optimum location of the ECR 14.5cm, rod worth of the ECR 6.11mk, shutdown margin of the ECR 1.61mk and safety reactivity factor of the ECR 1.36. The results indicate that an additional safety rod can be used to enhance safety of the MNSR.
