dc.description.abstract | Shonga, the study area is s i t u a t e d in the alluvium of the River Niger, in Kwara S t a t e , Nigeria, Between November 1980 and January 1981, twenty nine Vertical E l e c t r i c a l Sounding and four Horizontal R e s i s t i v i t y P r o f i l i n g of a t o t al l e n g t h of 4.7 km using the Schlumberger and the Wenner e l e c t r o d e arrays r e s p e c t i v e l y were undertaken in the study a r e a . The aim was to map the aquifers and to determine the a p p l i c a b i l i t y of the dc r e s i s t i v i t y methods in d e l i n e a t i ng the extent of iron contamination of the groundwater; since hydrochemical data i n d i c a t e s a high iron content (19 ppm), in the only borehole and a high chloride ion in some large diameter wells of the study area. In March, 1981 an SP survey with a t o t a l length of 3.7 Km t h a t cut across the l e n g t h of the study area was carried out for d e l i n e a t i ng the extent of high chloride content in the aquifer. The e l e c t r i c a l r e s i s t i v i t y method has mapped the a q u i f e r s of the study area. However, q u a l i t a t i v e and q u a n t i t a t i v e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s do not d e l i n e a t e the extent of iron contamination in the a q u i f e r s . Correlation with hydrochemical data from nearby wells has shown the high SP anomalies to represent the high chloride ion water - bearing aquifers of the study area. The southern half of the study area has been identified as having fresh water aquifers; hence, future boreholes and wells are recommended to be sited in t h i s region. | en_US |
