Abstract
Striga Senegalensis Benth is among the worst weeds of the world, but locally, it is an
ethnomedicinal plant.
Its antifertility and abortifacient activities have been published however little on its
Chemistry is known.
ST-1 , an isolate from its (the plant) ethylacetate exract was physically (spectroscopic
methods) and chemically examined. The information obtained led to the proposed
structure: 2- Carbonamide-6-hydroxy-9H-carbazole ( a carbazole alkaloid).
The ethanolic extract of the plant had marked effects on the isolated heart artria and
ileum of the rat and rabbit respectively . Its mechanism of action on the uterus appeared
to be that of interfering with calcium ingress and / or calcium release from intracellular
store.
