Abstract
The quality of drinking water in Zaria has been studied. The treated water samples have been collected from different public taps within Zaria and a tap outside the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) waterworks. In addition, raw water samples were collected from both the Zaria and ABU dams. Chemical analyses include the determinations of pH conductivity, residue (total, filtrable and non-filtrable), chloride, fluoride, iodide and some metals. Sodium and potassium have been determined by Flame Photometry whereas calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, lead, arsenic and mercury have been determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The results have been compared with the World health Organisation (WHO) standards. The parameters: pH (except values for treated water from the ABU waterworks which fell slightly outside the upper range), conductivity, residue, chloride are present in ranges within the WHO specified limits. Calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and lead are also found to be present in concentrations within the UHO specified limits whereas copper, manganese, arsenic and mercury are found to be absent in the water samples. Fluoride is found to be present in both the raw and treated samples in concentrations higher than the UHO standard. This makes the water unfit for consumption, especially here in Nigeria where fluoride containing toothpastes of unascertained fluoride contents are generally used and the fluoride contents of commonly ingested food substances are not known. Iodide has been found in some cases to be present in concentrations higher than the WHO standard.
