Abstract
ABSTRACT A ground survey was conducted for the investigation of the amount of radioactivity in Kufena, Zaria, northwest Nigeria. The technique of gamma ray spectrometry was applied using Scintillometer and gamma ray spectrometer (DISA-300). Activity concentration levels due to K, U, and Th were measured in the area along profiles spaced at 50 metres. Activity concentration ranges of the concerned radioelements were as follows: K was 0.03 – 6.5 %, U was 23.4 – 64.1 ppm, and Th was 8.3 – 89.1 ppm. The study identified Uranium and thorium as the main sources of radioactivity in the rocks of the area while potassium is not a major contributor to the gamma ray activity observed in the field. The study also revealed that uranium mineralization in Kufena may be of low grade.
