Abstract
ABSTRACT This study is the result of a field work carried out in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State of Nigeria between April and December, 1981. The aim is to survey the literary qualities of folktales and song's as performed within the socio-cultural milieu of Aguata. The study also aims at showing how the social, religious and economic pressures impinging on Aguata society have affected these art forms. It also will demonstrate how these art forms performed the twin functions of entertainment and socialization. Chapter one is a survey of some earlier approaches to the study of oral literature. This begins with a global review of the studies, tappers down to early studies of the subject in Nigeria and ends with what has been done on oral literature of Aguata. Also included in this chapter is the research approach adopted in the work. Chapter Two looks at the social and cultural context of the performances. It also explores the hopes and fears of the people as reflected in the art forms. The chapter then looks at the training, status and remuneration of artists in the society.
