| dc.description.abstract | Investigation in to aspects of the biology of Porcus bavad (ptaff) in Tiga dam lake were conducted between August, 1986 and July 1987. Samples were obtained from commercial fish landings in Tiga, Rurum and Bagauda beside the dam twice or thrice monthly, during the period of investigation, A total of 510 Specimens were examined of which 336 (65.9%) had fed and 174 (34.0%) had empty stomachs. The fish was Piscivorous, however those below 30cm standard length were predominantly omnivourous feeding on fishes, insects and plants while the larger ones above 30cm were typically piscivorous feeding on Alestes spt synodontis sp and Tilapia sp. The length - weight regression analysis indicated positive allometrie growth. The standard length of the specimens ranged from 12.0cm to 57.2cm for males, while that of the females ranged from 11.8cm to 55.0cm. The weight of both sexes ranged from 81.Og to 1716.Og. Size distribution studies showed that the females were smaller than the males. The mean condition factor determined were found to be high for most part of the period of investigation. Out of a total of 510 specimens examined, 311 were males and 199 were females. The fish showed a well defined peak in the breeding activity from May to August. The mean fecundity estimate was 4,726 + 690. ( xi ) | en_US |
