Thirty six (36) apparently healthy Zebu cattle in Zaria, were assayed for some serum biochemical parameters. The mean serum concentrations were as follows Na+ , 140.03 ± 5.54 (mMol/1); C1-, 98.67 ± 2.23(mMol/l); K+,4.36 ± 0.40 (mMol/1); HCO,, 23.69± 2.69 (mMol/1); Glucose, 4.64± 5.20 (mMol/1); Bilirubin, 6.94± 3.22 (mMol/1); BUN, 5.66 ±2.11 (mMol/1); AST 46.96 ±11.25 (IU/1) and Albumin, 26.6 ±3.16 (g/1). The standard deviations were within explanable limits and the mean serum concentrations of these parameters reflects that the animals under investigation were apparently healthy. A set of four 4 (Group B) young zebu cattle were infected with a Zaria strain Trypanosoma vivax. The serum biochemical parameters was investigated, serum Na+ and CI- levels significantly (p<0.05) increased following decreasing parasitaemia on days, 6, 7 and 8 post infection (p.i), while the greatest drop was on day 9 p.i to a point of hyponatremia and hypochloremia. Serum K+values significantly (p<0.05) decreased during this period, while serum HCO'3 showed significant (p<0.005) intermittent increases at the same period indicating a possible metabolic disturbance and / or kidney's inability to control the electrolyte changes. Serum bilirubin and Albumin levels significantly (p<0.05) increased following increasing parasitemia due to erythroclensis taking place and catabolic breakdown of proteins following fever of parasitemia. Serum glucose parasitemia significantly increased following decreasing parasitemia indicating that there is a relationship between glucose levels and parasitemia.en_US
