dc.description.abstractFluoroquinolones and Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactam (ESBL) antibiotics represent important classes of antibiotics in both veterinary and clinical practice. Given their efficacy in treating infections resistant to other drugs, these drugs have enjoyed widespread and often indiscriminate use. This study was aimed at determining the occurrence of antibacterial resistant E. coli from poultry and their potential for disseminating plasmid-borne qnrand ESBL gene variants. Twenty five (25%) of farms that are registered with the poultry clinic of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria within the year 2014 were selected using simple random sampling technique. 30% E. coliisolation rate was recorded. The highest resistance to fluoroquinolone was seen with enrofloxacin (49.3%) followed by ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin with 33.3 and 22.7% respectively, while 58.7% were resistant to nalidixic acid. About 93.3, 80 and 76% were respectively resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, streptomycin and sulphamethoxazole/trimethoprim. Resistance to chloramphenicol, tetracycline and gentamicin also respectively accounted for 68, 65.3 and 52%. Least resistance was however seen with doxycycline (10.7%), nitrofurantoin (6.7%), ceftriaxone (6.7%), imipenem (2.7%) and cefepime (1.3%). Multidrug resistance was seen in 92% of the isolates tested,all of which had a MAR index of ≥0.20. qnrS and bla TEM were found in eighteen (24%) of the E. coli isolates. This study however, showed no significant association between management type and feed type with fluoroquinolone and ESBL resistance. This study has demonstrated a high prevalence of multidrug resistance among E. coli isolates from poultry in Zaria. It further revealed the existence of qnrS and bla TEM,an ESBL resistance encoding gene. It is therefore recommended that poultry farmers use antibiotics as therapeutic only when necessary in accordance with good drug use and management practices under the prescription of a certified veterinarian.en_US
