This work present the results of determination of some pollutants and trace metals in suspended solids, side-sediments and water from Zaria dam, which is the main water reservoir from which Zaria metropolis, is being provided with pipe-borne water. Composite samples were taken at different points in the dam, minimum of three composite samples were taken for each month of sampling. Samples were taken in May, (before the rainy season) in August, (rainy season) and in December (Dry season). Preliminary tests were carried out on all the samples and AAS was used to determine metals concentration, other parameters were determined using standard methods. The information from the data obtained was analyzed using statistical methods. To access the physicochemical composition of the suspended solids, side-sediments and water samples, descriptive statistical analyses were carried out and also a multivariate analysis method of data analysis using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (CA), Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The samples taken in August, during the rainy season, show higher concentration of trace metals for side-sediments, suspended solids, and water samples. Trace metals in the suspended solids, side-sediments and water samples were found to be higher in the order; Zn > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd. From the multivariate analysis results, two components were sufficient to explain the dam monitored. In the study, an attempt was made to determine factors that could cause variation in water quality at the Zaria dam by using PCA. This result showed that domestic waste, industrial waste and agricultural run-off during rainy season may be the main cause for the variation in the water.en_US
