dc.description.abstract | The emulsion polymerisation of vinyl acetate has been studied at 400C +/- 1 using benzoyl peroxide and ferrous iron as the initiator system. Three different emulsifying agents are used. The effect of emulsifying agent, its concentration and the time of polymerisation on the emulsion properties, the polymer yield and molecular weight have been investigated. The results show that the generalised theory of emulsion polymerisation applies to a limited extent to this system. The rate of polymerisation is constant between 0-80 percent polymerisation. The molecular weight decreases with time of polymerisation. This has been attributed to increasing rate of initiation with time. The effect of molecular weight on the tensile properties of the polymer film has been studied. The results show that polymer samples prepared with varying emulsifier concentration have narrower molecular weight distribution when compared to samples obtained at varying time of polymerisation and constant emulsifier concentration. | en_US |
