There is rapid urban growth in Kaduna State and this came with conversion of farmland and bushes into built-up areas. The pipelines and their associated Rights of Way (ROW) were laid and established since 1976 when there was less quest for land for residential and other purposes. With the recent increase in population and the consequent urban growth, more residential buildings are being constructed where there were none. This research took a geospatial approach to analyze the encroachments on pipeline ROW and its effects on the environment along System 2D pipeline, Kaduna State, Nigeria between 2003 and 2015. Google Earth images of the study area for 2003, 2009 and 2015 were obtained. System 2D extends from Kaduna Refinery to Kano Depot via Zaria Pump Station. However, the length of the system 2D pipeline covered in this study is eighty seven (87) Kilometers. The coordinates of the pipeline markers were obtained using a GPS (Garmin 62) and plotted in ArcGIS 10.1 to show the route taken by the pipeline. A 25metres buffer was activated on the route taken by the pipeline to delineate the Right of Way. The satellite images for each of the years were georeferenced and the images were classified into built up, farmland, bare land and water bodies for each of the years using supervised classification. The ROW layer was then overlaid on the classified images for each of the years to delineate the encroachments on the ROW. The three images were overlaid on each other to show the encroachments on the ROW for each of the years and for each of the settlements. The results of the study showed that the pipeline traversed sixteen (16) settlements. Refinery Junction, Mahuta, Kamazou, Bagado, Keke, Saye, Kufena, Zaria Pump Station, Hanwa and Dogarawa had built up areas that encroached on the ROW, while Kakura, Kangimi, Kargo, Rigachukun, Jaji and Sabon Yelwa had encroachments on the pipeline ROW by farmlands. Hanwa had the highest encroachments on the ROW by buildings as at 2015, covering an area of 15.99 hectares, while Kakura had the highest encroachments on the pipeline ROW by farmlands, which was 27.26 hectares. The total encroachments on pipeline ROW by built up was 15.97%, 20.17% and 24.29%, while the total encroachments by farmlands was 84.03, 79.83% and 75.71% for 2003, 2009 and 2015 respectively. The study recommended more enlightenment on the dangers of encroachments on Pipeline ROW, improved surveillance and introduction of Aerial/Satellite monitoring of Pipeline, clearing of the ROW, replacing of ageing pipelines by the PPMC as well as discouraging farming activities on the ROW, as it exposes the pipelines to harsh environmental conditions and to vandals.en_US
