Abstract
Jimeta - Yola, as Gongola S t a t e ' s Administrative Centre could not boast of main or central market of her own, the one she has, is In a deplotable condition of congestion, lack of f a c i l i t i e s , u t i l i t i e s and services. The old market is a congested s i t e of 0.6 hectare by the main crossroads in the middle of the high density area of the town. With growth in population as the town became the s t a t e 1 s Administrative Centre in 1976, a new Jimeta main market whose s i t e measures 4 hectares was constructed. In 1964, the new Jimeta main market was burnt down during maltatslne's r i o t , as such there was not viable place to carry out economic a c t i v i t i e s . This resulted in hike in prices of essential commodities, therefore an adhoc s i t e was proposed in which the authority allocated a piece of land to each individual trader, who would then on h i s or her own put up a shed for himself or herself regardless of the commodities he or she was to deal on. The layout was hap-hazard because it was not planned, the sheds are of varying shapes and outlook. Throughout history, villages and towns have had market squares, and s t r e e t s with a concentration of stores and other r e t a i l f a c i l i t i e s . Such an area was called 'agora' in Greece; bazaew' in Turkey and 'Casbash' in vii Morocco, The shaped of today's shopping Centre "reflects the intention to give maximum accessibility to private Cars. This led to clusters of stores, surrounded by parking that covers three to five times more ground than the buildings. Recently, the advantages to pedestrian c i r c u l a t i on within the Centre were discovered and the 'new' concept of smalls and courts is reminiscent of the medieval market - places. Research has shown that the present Jimeta market is plunged into problems ranging from congestion due to small size, poor t r a f f i c , network and parking, grossly inadequate services, u t i l i t i e s and f a c i l i t i e s . The Structural and drainage system conditions are so poor t h a t there is a need for Main Market at the bare burnt down s i t e . The Main Market befitting a s t a t e capital on the basis of a bold and imaginative design geared towards establishing a meaningfull coherent and stable image of architectural space. Such market will have to be efficient; convenient and a t t r a c t i v e . These are based on the identified planning problems from the case studies.
