The gold occurrences north of Isanlu (Kwara State) were investigated using combined geological and geochemical prospecting methods. The general geology, stream sediments and gold in heavy mineral concentrates were surveyed. The area studied is part of the schist belts of the S.W Nigerian Basement Complex and the geology is favorable for gold being similar to the Ilesha schist belt. Gold mineralization occurs in primary quartz veins, disseminated in amphibolites and also in secondary eluvial and alluvial deposits. Data obtained from the stream sediment survey were subjected to statistical interpretation and it was found that the lognormal distribution pattern appears to be the one most applicable to the data. The heavy mineral survey was used to field-check for gold occurrences as the investigations progressed, and it also prove its worth in confirming anomalies detected by the stream sediment survey. The significant correlation that exists between Pb/Cu and Pb/Zn was taken to probably distinguish vain mineralization from disseminated mineralization in amphibolites. Whether or not they are indicators for gold remains uncertain. The investigations succeeded in delineating known gold occurrences and has indicated some prospective gold targets. Some of the known occurrences have been assessed partially and are recommended for further detailed work. The methods of investigation used were useful but the heavy mineral survey is a better exploration tool at this stage.
