A total of 725 samples comprising 314 stool samples collected from six different hospitals in Zaria; 85 'nono' and 95 'fura' samples obtained from three markets in Zaria; and 231 water samples from tanks (63), wells (54), dams (22), taps (74), and streams (18) were included in the study. The samples were examined for Salmonella using the conventional culture method of identification. Two Salmonella isolates were obtained from stool samples and none from water, 'fura' and 'nono' samples. The isolation rate from stool was therefore 0.6%. The two Salmonella isolates obtained in this study, three human isolates of S. typhi obtained from the Department of Microbiology of this University, and Escherichia coli K-12 were tested for susceptibility to 13 antimicrobial agents. All the five Salmonella isolates were resistant to eight antibiotics namely, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin, erythromycin, cefuroxime, penicillin, neomycin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and tetracycline. The E. coli was also resistant to all the above mentioned antimicrobial agents except cefuroxime. All the isolates were susceptible to kanamycin, trimethoprim and gentamicin, and none was resistant to all drugs simultaneously. Resistance to chloramphenicol was found in three of the five Salmonella isolates. The minimum inhibition concentration of cefuroxime for five Salmonella isolates and E. coli K-12 were determined, and found to be 60|ig/ml and 30μg/ml for the salmonellae and E. coli respectively.en_US
