T The distribution of vibrio organisms in the environments in Giwa, Zaria and Sabon-Gari local government areas of Kaduna State was investigated. Samples were collected from ponds, wells and stream. One hundred and fifty samples each were collected from these sources. In addition 150 samples each of human stools and duck stools as well as the roots of 5 waterletus were examined for vibrio organisms. A total of 29 vibrio organisms were isolated from 450 water samples while 4 isolates each were obtained from the 150 human stool and 150 Duck Stool samples respectively. No vibrio isolate was recovered from the roots of the water-letus. Out of the total of 37 vibrio isolates, 16 were identified to belong to the vibrio cholerae serogroup 01, while the remaining 21 isolates belong to vibrio cholerae non-01 serogroup. 13 out of the 16 isolates of the 01 serogroup were identified as inaba biotype while 2 could not be conclusively identified. Eleven of the 21 isolates belonging to the non-01 serogroup were identified to be vibrio parahaemolyticus, while the remaining were regarded as other vibio species which could not be identified to species level due to lack of materials. The dependence of the communities to some large extent on pond, stream and well water for agricultural and domestic purposes exposes them to the risk of vibrio cholerae infectionsen_US
