X ABSTRACT The majority of Nigerian women in the Urban centers have always been - and still are engaged in a variety of economic activities in and outside the home. Yet, very little attention has been paid to the vital contribution these women make to the economy of the Nation through their informal activities. This Study thus attempts to contribute to an understanding of the level of female participation in the informal labour sector and assess their contribution to economic development. To achieve this aim, data collected from questionnaire interviews were subjected to Crosstabulation and Multiple - Regression analysis. The result gives a basic outline of the participatory perspective and shows on the one hand, income and age as major determining factors of participation. On the other hand, are the myriad problems like lack of credit facilities, illiteracy and others, hindering the effective participation, growth and recognition of women in development. The implication of these findings led to the suggestions and conclusion that, for the Nation to achieve her development objectives and make economic progress, concrete and determined steps must be taken to reduce the problems women face in the informal labour environment for their greater productivity and contribution to the Nation's economic development.en_US
