Abstract
Three different geophysical methods namely resistivity, self-potential (S.P.) and very low frequency (V.L.F.) have been employed to delineate the extent of kaolin deposits and explore possible places for groundwater aquifers in the vicinity of Minjibir, Kano State. A reconnaissance survey was carried out along three long profiles, while detail work was done on a 200x400 m grid located in the vicinity of an existing kaolin pit. The detail resistivity survey results indicate a three layer sub—strata with resistivities of 600 to 1,175 ohm meter for the first layer, 100 to 235 ohm m for the middle layer and 2,400 XL-m and above for the third layer. It shows a thickness varying from 1.1 to 1.7 m for the top layer and 11.4 + 2.4 m to 21.7 ± 1.3 m for the second layer. These results are in agreement with those deduced from the V.L.F. detail survey and the available borehole data of the survey area. Using resistivity profiling and S.P. methods, the extent of the kaolin deposit was delineated and its total mass was estimated to be around 1.7 ± 0 . 2 million tons. Two prospective places to drill boreholes for water supply have been suggested based on the results of the V.L.F., S.P., and resistivity surveys. The results of mechanical analysis of the top soils have been correlated with the heights of the sampling points. Silt and coarse sand provides the highest multiple correlation factor, approximately 0.6 with height, which indicates that the upper most layers are composed of coarse sand covered by silt.
