Abstract
vi ABSTRACT The synthesis of azo dyes derived from different diazo components and coupling components was undertaken and their spectroscopic properties in different solvents (ethanol, toluene and acetone) were measured. The results show that substituents have a marked effect on the colour of the azo dyes. Some of the subtituents shift the max of the dyes bathochromically while others cause a significantly hypsochromic shift in the max observed. The max of the dyes in ethanol is higher compare to other solvents (i.e acetone and toluene) due to high dielectric constant and hence more polar character of the former. Analysis of the synthesised dyes by i,r, comfirmed the different groups present in the molecule. The effect of halochromism on the colour of the dyes syntheised were examined and protonation of azo dyes occurs readily. Finally, all the dyes synthesised were applied to polyester and nylon fabric and their fastness characteristics assessed. It was found generally, that the dyes are very resistant to wash fastness and are also found suitable for transfer printing.
