Abstract
This study investigated the stakeholders’ perceptions on the management of
academic staff in tertiary institutions in Yobe state. In order to have a solid
understanding of the topic, several books and other people’s work on the
topic were reviewed. The target population for the study comprised of 659
academic staff from six tertiary institutions in Yobe state. A total of 234
academic staff were used as representative sample. The survey study method
was adopted for the study. The instrument used in the study was developed
by the researcher after validation by the researcher’s supervisor. A pilot study
was conducted using the instrument. Six (6) null hypotheses were formulated
and tested at 0. 05 significance level. Statistical tools used were cross
tabulation and percentages, frequency distribution and one way analysis of
variance (ANOVA) all the hypotheses were rejected. The study revealed that
academic staff in tertiary institutions in Yobe were motivated with the
availability of instructional materials for teaching and learning. It was found
out that academic staff were motivated with staff development and training
and the encouragement given to them to go for in – service training. Also the
result of the study showed that academic staff of tertiary institutions in Yobe
state were leaving the institutions to more lucrative organizations perhaps due
to inadequate salary packages. It was therefore recommended that tertiary
institutions in Yobe state should open more training programmes which
would equally be accessible to all academic staff. The heads of tertiary
institutions should involved academic staff in decision-making process in
their institutions. Based on the findings of the study appropriate
recommendations were made.
