Abstract
The study was undertaken to find out the effect of communication system on
performance. Communication plays a vital role being the life wire of any organisation
its importance in an organisation can be likened to the circulation of blood in animals.
Although several problems can effect performance in a work place the researcher had
singled out the effect of communication. To this end, problems affecting the
communication process between superiors and subordinates were examined. Other
areas covered by the study were the medium of communication and the role of
informal communication.
In Chapter Two, the work of the other authors was reviewed in order to acquaint the
reader with the state of knowledge in the field. In Chapter Three, the organisation
under study i.e. Secretary to the State Government Office was examined.
The findings of the study revealed that several problems affect the communication
process between superiors and subordinates. Those identified were language barrier,
mood, attitude/behaviour, confidence, prejudices/biases and physical distance. The
media of communication was discovered not to be quite effective. Face to face
communication was rated to be the most effective means whereas the file which is
synonymous to an office was rated second among other medium. Informal
communication was not adequately utilised to supplement the formal channels. Staff
members were not given enough avenues to interact informally, so as to facilitate
communication on a formal basis in the office.
Finally some suggestions were put forward to improve the communication system in
the secretary to the State Government Office, Yola
