Abstract
The groundwater potential of Kafanchan and environs has been investigated using a combination of geological, geophysical and hydrological methods. The groundwater resource in the area is mostly within the weathered overburden, fractured basement rocks and the newer basalts. The result of the study shows good groundwater potentials. The hydraulic properties in the study area have been calculated. Transmissivity value ranges between 1.185 to 9.829 m2/ day with an average of 3.461 m2/day. The hydraulic conductivity value ranges from 0.019 to 19.886 m/day with an average of 1.550 m/day. Specific Capacity value ranges from 2.340 to 19.553 m3//day/m with an average of 6.831 m3/ day/m. Measurements of depth to water table for both peak of wet and dry seasons indicated that the water table is shallow, ranging from 0.3 to 9.0 m and 4 to 18.8 m for rainy and dry seasons respectively. Groundwater contour map and flow directions for the peak of dry season was produced. The groundwater in the mapped area generally flows to the southeastern part. Water analysis also indicated that the water is of good quality in terms of its alkali and alkali earth metals. Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR) falls between 0.06 and 2.2 and therefore the water suitable for irrigation. On a Piper trilinear diagram the water in the study area has been classified into Na+K-HCO3 and Ca+Mg, Na+K-HCO3 water types.
