Abstract
This thesis presents the findings of a study on the effect of women’s
educational attainment on fertility of urban centres in Kaduna State. The study
was conducted in the three most populated urban towns in Kaduna State
(Kaduna, Zaria and Kafanchan). A total of four neighborhoods were randomly
selected from eight neighborhoods in each town for the administration of
questionnaires. A total of 420 structured questionnaires constituting 0.1
percent of the sampled population of the three towns which is 421,248 were
administered. The first household along the street was picked and
subsequently, every third household was selected to respond to the
questionnaire and data was collected from ever – married women aged
between 15 – 49 years. Data collected from the field were coded and vetted,
then fed into the computer. The data were analyzed using descriptive
statistics, chi- square test and correlation test. The analysis strongly suggests
that women’s education affect fertility negatively. Education is positive in
explaining women’s current use of contraceptives. Educated women are more
likely to appreciate the advantages of having fewer, better educated children.
Areas for further investigations are highlighted. On the basis of the findings, it
was recommended among others the need to change the attitude of parents by
enlightening them on the long term benefit of women education. Compulsory
schooling laws should be straightened not to discriminate between boys and
girls and possible reabsorbing strategies could be designed to reabsorb women
who have dropped out of school or who could not go to school due to lack of
sponsorship, early pregnancy and other reasons, training more female teachers
and the design of curriculum be made relevant to future employment so that
women do not stay unemployed for too long after graduation.
