dc.description.abstract | Nasopharyngeal aspirates (NPA) and sera specimen were taken from 112 children with pneumonia visiting the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos. Pleural effusions samples were also taken in 11 of the cases as positive control for bacteriology. The NPA samples were cultured for Mycoplasmas and bacteria using standard procedures. Complement fixation and indirect haemagglutination tests were carried out on the sera samples to determine the Mycoplasma pneumoniae antibody titre. Specific bacterial pneumonia was demonstrated in 45 cases (40.2%) of the patients with S. aureus dominating. Mycoplasma pneumoniae was isolated in 12 cases (10.7%) based on growth inhibition test. The complement fixation test was positive in 44 cases (39.3%), while indirect haemagglutination test detected 54 positive cases (48.7%). Cumulative isolation and serology cases was found to be 55 (49.1%), and indirect haemagglutination test was found to be more sensitive compared to complement fixation test. 50 control patients were also included in the study. These are patients with no clinical symptoms of pneumonia. Non of their NPA samples yielded single bacterial isolate neither was M. pneumoniae isolated. Their sera samples also did not show diagnostic M. pneumoniae titre from either serological test. | en_US |
