dc.description.abstractABSTRACT A biological survey of fish species in Shiroro Lake, Niger State was conducted between April 1987 and March 1988. The specimens were bought from the fishermen at three villages located around the lake. Information from the fishermen showed that the methods of capture were by gill nets, hook and line, fi3h traps and fences. A total of 1,38U specimens of fish from 13 families comprising 22 genera and 31 species were studied. Most of the species were immature, of one age group and were in good condition throughout the period of investigation. Growth in Brycinus nurse and Oreochromis niloticus was observed to be isometric and negative allometric respectively. Eight species viz: Labeo senegalensis, Auchenoglanis occidentalis, Schilbe uranoscopus, Clarias gariepinus, Malapterurus electricus, Lates niloticus, Sarotherodon galllaeus and Tilapia zilli showed positive allometric growth. The fishes exhibited differences in the dietary items selected. Most of them were found to be predators, feeding mainly on fish, insects,crustaceans and molluscs. There were significant differences (P<0.05) between the observed and the expected sex ratio of Schilbe uranoscopus and Hemichromi8 bimaculatus. For most of the species, the sex ratio was approximately 1:1.en_US
