Abstract
The work traced the evolution of Local Government administration in Nigeria from colonial era to 2012. Relying mainly on secondary data, the study outlined how series of events which include colonial intrusion and subsequent introduction of indirect rule system which made the system as an instrument mainly for maintaining colonial laws through Native Authorities. The work also argued that, the 1976 Local Government Reform accorded the Councils a third tier status and enshrined reform measures in the 1979 Constitution but were subjected to control by the state Governments. The work also opined that, this has significantly affected LG administration in the country and rendered them ineffective. This situation has accentuated another reform effort in 2003 in order to improve better administration of the people at the local level. Moreover, the study discovered that, the struggle for better LGs administration in the country in the year 2012 took a dramatic change as efforts are being made by the National Assembly to amend Sections 7,162; 7, 313 and Section 162 of the 1999 constitution and replace them with ‘LG autonomy Act’
