Abstract
As we go about our everyday lives, we come across situations that require a little bit of
translation here and there. This is so because communication has to be effectively done before
comprehension could be satisfactorily achieved. Infact, the need for translation is more pronounced
and necessary in respect of the French language in an anglophone country like Nigeria.
There are various types of translation, depending on the situations or needs at a given point in
time. Principal among these include: Professional translation, scientific translation, technical
translation, Literary translation, Automatic translation and pedagogical translation.
The last type of translation stated above, that is, pedagogical translation shall form the basis of
this study. This is the type used by teachers and or users of foreign languages.
In most of our Federal and State Colleges of Education, translation is wrongly used. Perhaps
this explains why the subject mater should be critically and empirically studied.
This study has been able to identify causes of wrong use of translation in Federal and State
Colleges of! ducation Pankkshin and Akwanga respectively. The causes were discovered through
various methods of case studies as identified by Busha and Harter. The results of this study here
brought to lime light the fact that translation has not been properly handled in our colleges of
Education despite its meritorious role in effective communication in the society.
The study ends by suggesting how the French language could be used and taught, especially
as it related to the topic of translation as well as how identified problems of translation could be solved
generally.
Indeed, it is hoped that this work will be an asset in the hands of teachers.
