Abstract
The effect of the approximate treatment of geodetic
observations on the Nigerian network is described with a
view to highlighting its adverse effect on the network.
In the approximate treatment of observations, the geoidal
undulations and the deviation of the vertical are neglected.
Methods are suggested for determining these parameters.
The correct procedures for carrying out the reduction of
observations are also given.
And since unknown systematic, errors usually exist in a
network, methods (both computational and observational) are
given for the possible ways these errors can be eliminated
or minimised. The effect of additional observations on the
Nigerian network is evaluated by means of an optimisation
technique based on computer simulated observations. A block
of the network is used for this purpose and the method of
variance-covariance analysis together with the related accuracy
criteria is used.
Also a brief history of the development of the network is
discussed.
