Abstract
Motivation is an important Managerial factor which encourages persons to give their best performance and
help in reaching enterprise goals. The type of reward practices used by an organisation plays an important
role in motivating employees 'productivity at the workplace. Nigeria, like any other country has a system o)
recognising out standing achievements of its citizens through the National Productivity Order of Merit
(NPOM) Award. This study examined the motivational effect of the NPOM award on the productivity
of individual recipients. It also looked at the significance of the NPOM award to National Productivity.
The study adopted a survey research method where primary data were collected with the aid of a structured
questionnaire. 1 'he data collected were analysed using the Chi square statistical tool. The findings revealed
that the award motivates increased productivity in the recipients of the award. The recommendations include
that the NPOM award should expand its scope and coverage to cover more Nigerians for its intended
purpose to be widely impactful
