The study is an attempt to look at the effect of creation of states both on the changing spatial patterns of population movements, and the development of the new state capitals and the entire country. Prior to the creation of states in 1967 and 1976, migration was towards the Federal Capital teritory, Regional Capitals ana the few industrial and commercial centres around them. The creation of states in 1967 and 1976, has created other attractive urban areas for migrants both from the rural areas and other urban areas. Apart from being the administrative centres, the new state capitals are emerging as the industrial and commercial centres within the states. Due to the opportunities created in the administrative, industrial and commercial establishments, the new states capitals have become attractive destinations for migrants. The influx of migrants and the enormous private and public investments in the new state capitals have increased the rate of socio-economic development. Apart from the effect of the expenditure patterns of the migrants on the economic activity in the urban areas, their movement also involves movement of capital to these urban areas. The capital has been invested in various socio-economic ventures in the urban areas. IV Thus, the general level of socio-economic activity has increased. In addition to the effect of creation of states on the changing spatial patterns of population movement it is a step foward towards equitable spatial development of the country.en_US
