dc.description.abstractThis thesis presents findings on the Effects of Migrants’ Remittance on the Livelihood of Households in Okene Local Government Area, Kogi State. The study is examined the effects of migrants’ remittances on the livelihoods of households in Okene LGA. Data for the study was obtained from the administration of a semi-structured questionnaire to 382 households selected through a third place ordered sampling. Items in the questionnaire elicited information on scale on of migration; direction, educational attainment, livelihood sources, rate of out-migration, remittance, reasons for migrating among others. The results show that 61 percent of the respondents were females and 39 percent were males. This is attributed to the fact that cultural practices do not favour women migrant in search of white collar jobs. In all, 64.4 percent of the respondents were 45 years and above because of the high rate of migration among youths less than 45 years. Also, 65.7 percent of the respondents were married. Migration level in the study area is about 85 percent due to poor standard of education and lack of social amenities. Employment opportunity is one of the major causes of out migration. Other findings revealed that effects of out migration on household as was farming activities and migrants contributed in the purchase of farm implements and the general financial needs of agricultural activities. The study recommended the establishment of entrepreneur and educational institutions. Improvement of social infrastructure to reduce out migration, and the rehabilitation of stressed and displaced community members by the Kogi State Government.en_US
