Abstract
Temperature, pH, conductivity, suspended solids (SS), chemical oxygen
demand (COD), ammonia-nitrogen, phenols, oils and grease chromium, zinc, lead
and copper were monitored on discharges from industries in Kaduna. Attention
was focussed on those that drain into Kaduna river.
Results show that the following industries or group of industries give
discharges with some parameters above permissible limits given by trade effluents
standards. Superphosphage Fertilizer Co (Co (pH values below 3)
Peugeout Industries (high metal values) Textile Industries (high values for
all parameters except ammonia-nitrogen.) COD and SS are higher than permissible
limits for all industries monitored especially in relationship to the
different end uses of river water put to use. The present position of things
in the discharge drains seems a nuisance if it should enter the Kaduna river
unchecked. Ways of checking these pollutants have been discussed especially
within these industries before discharges come out. Pretreatment of waste
with physical means like filtration, chemical means like oxidation, acid
base neutralisation and involvement of special equipment has been recommended.
