Abstract
Determination of reactor-based essential parameters in activation analysis
(neutron spectra shape-factor and the thermal to epithermal flux ratio f) for inner
channel (No. 5) and outer channels (No. 7) of the GHAna Research Reactor-1 (GHARR-
1) a Miniature Neutron Source Reactor (MNSR) was undertaken in an effort to
characterize the channels for the application of k0-standardization in Neutron Activation
Analysis with the reactor
Measurements were carried out according to the Hogdahl flux convention using
cadmium ratio method. Specific activities of Gold and Zirconium monitors irradiated
together with and without cadmium cover under the same neutron flux were used to
obtain cadmium ratios. The thermal to epithermal flux ratio f of the reactor were
measured and found to be 17.28 for the inner channel (No. 5) and 40.38 for the outer
channel (No.7) while the epithermal flux-shaping factors for these channels were
obtained as –0.107 0.0001 and –0.173 0.0001 respectively. The -values were
obtained by iteration method using in-house computer programs (Q-Basic and C++)
developed for this work. The results obtained compared favorably well with the
previously determined ones by Akaho and Nyarko 2002 for inner channel No. 1 (f = 18.8
and = - 0.104) and outer channel No. 6 (f = 49.0 and = - 0.0261) of the same reactor.
