PREVALENCE, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY PROFILE OF SALMONELLA ISOLATES FROM CHICKEN OFFALS AND POULTRY HANDLERS STOOL IN ZARIA, KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract
The study investigated the prevalence and antibiotic resistance profile of Salmonella spp. isolated from chicken offals, roasted chicken, and poultry handlers stool. A total of 174 offals, 120 roasted chicken kebabs and 57 stool samples from poultry handlers were collected and examined for the presence of Salmonella using standard methods. Antibiogram of all isolates were performed using disc diffusion method. Standard questionnaire to determine the risk of infection of farm handlers of poultry were administered randomly for possible zoonotic significance. The prevalence rate observed was 0.85% where only one sample of the 174 offals analysed was positive for Salmonella. The roasted chicken were free of any Salmonella contamination, and two samples of the poultry handlers stool tested positive for Salmonella. Only one serovar of salmonella was detected; S. Arizonae which belonged to Ssp IIIa and group O. All the isolates were resistant to tetracycline but showed sensitivity to ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, cefotaxime, gentamicin, sulphamethoxazole- trimethoprim and chloramphenicol. Biosecurity practices in this study were categorized based on isolation, good management practices and hygienic practices. It was observed that Salmonella infection in chickens and among farm handlers was prevented by strict application of biosecurity measures, thus, the low prevalence.
