Abstract
Ten method Is were used for the collection of
insects at the Botanical garden, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria- The methods were Hand picking, Sweepnet, Pitfalltrap, Water-trap, Bait-trap, Beating, Suction (aspiration), Digging (escavation) Barking and Light-trap.The relative efficiency (RE) of each method was determined. Light-trap with a score of RE = 16.3% was highest. This was followed by the Sweepnet method
RE = 14.3%. Suction method has the least value of RE = 2.0%. Twelve orders of insects were collected by the various methods. These were Odonata, Orthoptera, Phasmida, Dermaptefa, Dictyoptera, Isoptera, Hymerioptera, Hemipter, Neuroptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Diptera,
The relative abundance (RA) for each order was determined. Hymenoptera scored RA = 35.7%, the highest. This was followed by the Isoptera RA = 15.71/2. The least score of RA = 0.6% was recorded for Odonata and Phasmida.
