dc.description.abstractThe prospect of acquiring and siting a nuclear research reactor at the Ahmadu Bello University is assesed in this thesis. The reactor proposed is relatively cheap, easily constructed and operated, safe in terms of reactor accidents, common to users operating research reactors in developing countries, and uses low fuel enrichments which conforms with the International Atomic Energy Agency requirements. The siting criteria examined includes considerations such as: reactor zones, topography, soil characteristics, meteorological conditions, and transport systems that will reduce traffic hazards. It is suggested that a research reactor of low power (1 MW), could be located at the proposed site because of the suitable siting conditions. The environmental problems such as: dispersal of airborne radionuclides, anticipated ecological problems, aircraft crashes, flood, forest fires, radiation monitoring and site security were also considered. The most virile problem of the nuclear industry - waste management was also considered in the context of the rather low suspect waste that will be generated from the reactor. A low power reactor, like the one proposed for the university will not cause serious environmental problems, if safeguards and monitoring of radiations are performed effectively.en_US
