Abstract
A computer program for the design of reinforced concrete shallow foundations is presented. The choice of the type of foundation is made interactively with the computer based on experience in design decisions. The computer program developed was used to design reinforced concrete foundations such as pads, combined, strip and raft footings that had been previously designed using manual methods in order to check its validity. The results obtained from the computer program turned out to be optimized versions of the manually computed results. The following advantages of the program over manual design were observed: • Elimination of tedious arithmetic and the attendant errors involved in manual calculations. This results in the accuracy of results • High speed in the processing of data to produce a design • Versatility in handling data • Optimisation of designs
