dc.description.abstract | Toxoplasma gondii infection among women of reproductive age especially pregnant women can lead to embryonic death, foetal reabsorption, foetal death, mummification fetus, still-birth and neonatal death. This study establishes the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection and it associated risk and demographic factors among pregnant womenattending antenatal care in the selected hospital in Kano Metropolis, KanoState. Enzyme linkedImmunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was used to assess the presence of Toxoplasma gondii IgG,IgM and IgG IgM specific antibodies and IgM positive isolate were further screen by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to detect the presence of B1 gene .Data collected wassubjected to Chi-square test using statistical package for social science verson 20 to determine the association between risk factors and Toxoplasma gondiiinfection. This study revealed the prevalence of 34.23%, 13.08% and 3.85% of IgG,IgM and IgG IgM antibodies respectively. Correlating the ELISA results obtained from the serum samples analyzedin this study with the demographic and risk factor associated with the infection as follows: age, reproductive history, stages of pregnancy, occupation, level of education, present of cat and sources of drinking water, there was no significance association in the occurrence of Toxoplasma gondii infection (P>0.05),only present of cat and sources of drinking water (P<0.05) shows a significant association. Seven positive IgMIsolates with higher titer value werescreened using PCR, only one Isolate confirmed positive for Toxoplasma gondiiB1 gene in the serum samples of pregnant women out. This study established the presence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in Kano metropolis with over roll prevalence of 43.4%. Hence campaign to intensify hygiene standard should be sustained in Kano metropolis and environs. | en_US |
