The levels of heavy metals, like lead, nickel, chromium and copper were determined in soil, vegetation and water samples taken from twelve state capitals of Nigeria, namely Lagos, Ibadan, Akure, Abeokuta, Kano, Ilorin, Makurdi, Maiduguri, Kaduna, Jos, Owerri and Sokoto. The samples were collected from along the sides of a major highway recording a reasonably heavy vehicle traffic volume. The determination of metals was carried out using atomic absorption spectroscopy and colorimetric methods. The levels of the metals in soil samples from Sokoto and Kano motor parks were also determined. The level of lead showed a distinct correlation with traffic volume. In all the state capitals, the metal concentrations in soil samples were generally below permissible thresholds. However the lead values at Sokoto motor part and on leaves from Ibadan, Lagos, Kano, Maiduguri and Kaduna were sufficiently high to cause some concern. The nickel concentrations in water samples from Ibadan, Lagos, Kano and Kaduna were found to be high. The two methods of analysis used were found to be statistically comparableen_US
